Notts suffer trademark collapse but stutter to survival regardless

As escapes from relegation go, Nottinghamshire’s survival at Trent Bridge could not have been less heroic

ScorecardAs escapes from relegation go, Nottinghamshire’s survival at Trent Bridge could not have been less heroic. It will probably prove to be the case that they are only staying up because when it came to the crunch, down in Southampton, Lancashire messed up. But it will be a shame-faced escape: trailing Somerset by 215 with seven wickets remaining, having been made to follow on, the odds are they will lose and lose heavily.Nottinghamshire bounced back into Division One in the spring with such vigour they found themselves top of the table, the most dangerous seam attack around – Stuart Broad, Jake Ball and Harry Gurney – disguising the fact that they could barely make a run.Perhaps by the time the Championship resumed with their England players absent they had happened upon the website which suggests the best way to survive your most pressing moments in life is to slap yourself in the face – hard. Notts make a habit of that in late season. They could make it into some sort of weird East Midlands Morris Dance and, now the season lasts until the end of September, they might as well all hang around a few days longer to perform it at the Nottingham Goose Fair.As Nottinghamshire’s first innings underwent a by-now-traditional collapse on the second day, failing to deliver a single batting point for the seventh time in 14 matches, the dreadful realisation dawned shortly after lunch that relegation had become a stark possibility. In the rush to the top of Division One in April, they had merely been squirreling points for the harsh times that lay ahead: no wins in their last six, all adding to a September record over the past nine years that extends to one win in 22.Last year, before Chris Read intervened with a magnificent farewell hundred, it might have cost them promotion; this year, for an abysmal half-hour or so, it looked likely to send them back down. As long as Lancashire were on course for 300 against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl, and then followed that up with victory, Nottinghamshire were heading for relegation. Then Lancashire lost their last three wickets on 273 to fall 27 runs short. With one bound Notts were free. Feeble cheers bubbled up around Trent Bridge.Their collapse to 133 all out in 35.3 overs, the tail rounded up by a Tom Abell hat-trick – three outswingers falling to second, first and third slip in turn – was even more embarrassing considering that Somerset had rattled up 353 for 7 on the opening day in decent batting conditions and then had thrashed 110 in 17.1 overs on the second morning, Craig Overton setting the tone with a four and a six off the offspinner, Matt Carter, whose appearance for a single over was something of a mystery. It’s been a hard slog – Moores

Peter Moores, Notts coach, on escaping relegation: “It’s a day of relief when you get over the line. We won’t hide from anything, it’s been a hard slog these last six weeks but it’s over. We have played some good cricket and got our points in the bank but since then it has been tough.”
Tom Abell, on his hat-trick: “It happened very quickly and is a bit of a blur but there was a little bit of swing and I tried to bowl in a decent area and the first one to Luke Fletcher took off a little bit and took the edge, the second one [Matt Carter] wasn’t a great ball but sometimes these things go your way and then I just to replicate it and thought ‘what will be, will be’ and it was a great catch from Craig O and I was in disbelief. I’ve got the ball and will keep it because it’s probably the only time this will happen.”

The Overton mayhem was carried forward by Jamie, who cracked 55 from 49 balls; when he hits down the order like this, the scoreboard should flash up Fee Fi Fo Fum, because he does not lack for raw physical power.Nottinghamshire lost Jake Libby early when he nicked the second ball of Lewis Gregory’s opening over to fourth slip, where Jack Leach parried the ball to Craig Overton at third. But they reached 50 for 1 sedately enough before crashing to 85 for 7, a period in which relegation fears rose and fell like the FTSE responding to the latest Brexit rumour.Either side of lunch Craig Overton picked up key wickets with successive balls. Steven Mullaney made 21 before nicking to James Hildreth at first slip and then Ben Duckett made a first-ball duck, edging a ball of challenging line to Marcus Trescothick at second slip. This being the Overtons, an unpredictable tale of country folk, twin brother Jamie limped off half way through an over with a turned ankle only to return later off a limited run. Rarely do both prosper at the same time without some mishap or other. But Craig, whose injury-hit season has seen his England reputation dwindle after a determined if not particularly successful Ashes campaign, bowled both Riki Wessels and Ben Slater and Lewis Gregory removed both Samit Patel and Tom Moores.Abell then introduced himself into the attack, adopted the outswinger grip with a characteristic air of youthful optimism and walked off the field nine balls later, with the ball being held aloft for his maiden hat-trick. That simple. If Nottinghamshire can take consolation from their latest debacle — it is that it provided ample evidence that their splurge of late-season signings, perhaps a rush unknown in the history of the county game, are not an irresponsible spending spree but are absolutely necessary.Slater has acquitted himself well since his move from Derbyshire, played securely as he joint top-scored with 35; the sooner Duckett’s season ends the better. The period of reflection that many of us anticipated would lead to a strong summer has not materialised.Joe Clarke arrives at the end of the season from Worcestershire with England aspirations, and Zak Chappell is a promising if vulnerable quick, enticed from Leicestershire. Assuming the talented allrounder Paul Coughlin is fully fit next April then Notts have filled a huge hole left by the sudden loss of the Read, an inspiration, the Taylors, James and Brendan, Michael Lumb, Brett Hutton and others; Alex Hales, too, is now a white-ball specialist, playing only when the overs are short and the weather is warm. Why they have recruited so heavily is clear to see but that does not alter the fact that county cricket’s compensation system is inadequate. At a time when the ECB shows scant regard for the smaller counties, it is by no means certain they will address the issue.

Man Utd: Pundit makes Ten Hag sack claim after "whispers" from Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag's job at Old Trafford is safe for now; however, rumours will continue to circulate regarding the Dutchman if results fail to improve at the club, according to one pundit.

Man Utd updates

This term, Manchester United have flattered to deceive and a culture of toxicity has bred its way into Old Trafford on and off the field, with off-field incidents involving Jadon Sancho and Antony alongside loanee Mason Greenwood creating mass hysteria away from the pitch.

Of course, the ongoing takeover saga at Man Utd has continued to destabilise the Premier League giants' progress in the transfer market. However, the Red Devils now look to finally be close to investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his petrochemicals firm Ineos following a long, drawn-out process, as per The Times.

Results-wise, United have lost five of their opening ten fixtures in the English top-flight and have lost the fear factor associated with away opposition pitching up at Old Trafford in years gone by. This was compounded on Sunday by Manchester City, who comfortably disposed of their rivals by a scoreline of 3-0 courtesy of a double from Erling Haaland and one from Phil Foden.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage laid into Manchester United's recruitment in the aftermath of the Red Devils' comprehensive defeat to Manchester City, saying: "You have got to look at the recruitment for Manchester United. Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Reguilon are three of your back four finishing the game for Manchester United against your rivals at Old Trafford."

In the Champions League, the Red Devils have won just one of their opening three group stage matches, in a dramatic yet unconvincing 1-0 victory over Copenhagen at Old Trafford last midweek; nevertheless, questions continue to reign regarding Ten Hag's ability to turn around the fortunes of his underperforming side.

Alan Hutton drops Erik ten Hag sack verdict

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC pundit Alan Hutton has indicated that he doesn't believe that Ten Hag's immediate future is under threat, despite recent reports saying Ratcliffe and Man Utd could look at former Chelsea manager Graham Potter. Nevertheless, the former Scotland international insists that "whispers" over his future and potential replacements will persist if results don't improve at Old Trafford.

"You just have to look at what he did last season. It might not be amazing for all Man United fans and what they used to be doing in the past but it is where they are at this moment in time, they are building something from the ground up and that takes time.

Erik ten Hag

"I think they have spent a lot of money and some of the signings have not worked out as yet but the whispers I am hearing always go around big clubs, especially when it is a takeover. Sometimes it is just rumours. If results take a drastic turn and they end up falling out the European spots then they might look to change it. He is not that long in the door so I think he will be given time but as we know at big clubs it can be difficult if you are not winning games. I think at this moment in time he is in an alright position."

Manchester United have no time to wallow or feel sorry for themselves, as Newcastle United await on Wednesday in the EFL Cup last 16 on Wednesday evening at Old Trafford.

Arsenal dealt "major new injury blow" in "setback" for Arteta

Arsenal have reportedly been dealt a "major new injury" blow in what has been described as a "huge setback" for manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal injuries – the latest

Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu are all currently contending with various issues at this moment in time. Saka, who comes as the latest injury worry, limped off late on against Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, and Arsenal have been waiting to find out the extent of his problem.

Arteta, speaking after their 2-0 win over the La Liga side, did admit he was hopeful over the winger's condition. The Spaniard explained:

"It was just a kick and I was told by the physios on the radio that he wasn’t happy to continue so he will have some discomfort but hopefully, I want to assume that he will be ok."

Meanwhile, club captain Odegaard and striker Nketiah both missed their clash against Sevilla, with both fighting to be fit for Burnley this weekend.

brais-mendez-martin-odegaard-tottenham-opinion

"They are racing against the clock to be fit and they are trying their best and they tried to be here today with us," said Arteta on Odegaard and Nketiah.

"It wasn’t possible and now we have another 48 hours before we play Burnley. We will try again and we will see because we need players at the moment."

The same can be said of Tomiyasu after he went off with his own knock against Sevilla, with Arteta not wanting to take any risks, but the likes of Jesus, Smith Rowe, Timber and Partey are more long-term absentees and appear set to miss Burnley.

Partey delivers "major new injury blow" to Arsenal

Sharing an update on the latter man's condition, journalist John Cross of The Daily Mirror has claimed that Arteta has been dealt a "major new injury blow".

douglas-luiz-saka-partey-arsenal-opinion

Indeed, it is believed Partey has undergone specialist surgery and is set to miss the rest of 2023, in what has been described as a "huge setback" for Arteta as he gears up for another Premier League title challenge. The 30-year-old has had to contend with fitness issues galore this season after originally being handed chances by Arsenal in a makeshift right-back role.

Partey's extended spell on the sidelines means that Arteta may even be tempted to dip into the winter transfer market for a solution, as links continue to surround Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz.

Shoots from distance

Plays long balls

Arsenal have also been targeting Arthur Vermeeren from Royal Antwerp, according to recent reports, and it appears midfield cover may well be more firmly on the agenda in north London.

This "latest setback" for Partey means he will be out for longer than expected, and there is an added complication with the Africa Cup of Nations in January next year. If the midfielder is back in time to take part in the tournament, Ghana may well want him to report for duty and leave Arsenal short in that area of the squad.

Shaw v Siraj the highlight in Mumbai's march to final

After impressing in his first Test series, Prithvi Shaw presented a case to be considered for the shorter formats but not without some luck

Saurabh Somani in Bengaluru17-Oct-2018AFPAfter heavy rain ended the contest early, it was Mumbai who marched into the Vijay Hazare Trophy final by recording their ninth consecutive win in the competition, but Hyderabad, who weren’t even sure of their participation until 12 hours prior to their first fixture, can walk away a proud side.Rohit Rayudu, the younger cousin of Ambati Rayudu, displayed admirable composure to make 122 not out. Struggling on 52 off 95 at one stage with the lower order for company, he ensured Hyderabad almost doubled their score in the last 15 overs to post a competitive 246 for 8. It wasn’t enough, though, with Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer scoring half-centuries as Mumbai won by the VJD method. A drizzle that turned into a torrential downpour forced the players off the field with Mumbai 155 for 2 in 25 overs. They didn’t return. The spice in the contest was provided by two people who were part of India’s dressing room until four days ago. There are many who think Mohammed Siraj and Shaw ought to be in the mix for India in limited-overs cricket too, and not just Test cricket. Shaw, of course, announced his entry in Tests in grand style, with a Man-of-the-Series performance against West Indies on debut.Siraj was considered unlucky for not making his own debut against West Indies, with the team management ignoring his red-hot form and opting to give the cap to Shardul Thakur, who limped out of the attack with his Test career just 1.4 overs old.On Wednesday, both Shaw and Siraj showed why pitch-forking them to the top level in ODIs might be a good idea. Siraj finished with first-spell figures of 3-0-33-0, while Shaw hit a fifty off just 34 balls, but for anyone watching both were winners.Siraj was introduced in the fifth over, but the stage had been set in the third over itself. Shaw had just slogged Akash Bhandari’s legspin wide of long-on for a boundary when he pulled up clutching his right shoulder. Play was held up while the physio ran out to treat him, and Shaw resumed, but the shoulder was still troubling him.Siraj opted for a short-ball attack. It would perhaps have been his go-to tactic anyway, having seen that Shaw could be uncomfortable when the ball was climbing into his body, particularly against the West Indies quick Shannon Gabriel. With an injured right shoulder, it made sense to force Shaw to use his bottom hand more.Siraj had Shaw in some trouble in the first over, and the action peaked in his next. The first ball went to the long-on boundary, but off a toe-ended pull that just cleared mid-on. Siraj then got his bouncer on target, and Shaw got a top edge on a pull to fine-leg. M Ravi Kiran ran in, got both hands to the ball while tumbling forward, and saw it pop right out. Three balls later, there was a similar chance, but easier. Standing not as far back, Ravi Kiran reached another top-edged pull in time, but the ball popped in and out again.Siraj had handled the first drop reasonably calmly, but he was seething now, standing mid-pitch with hands on his hips and eyes that could bore a hole in the ground. Captain Ambati Rayudu gave vent to his feelings, staying mid-pitch after Siraj had walked off and glaring at the fielder.Ravi Kiran had to bowl the next over, and he had Rayudu and Siraj at mid-off and mid-on. Both put their anger aside to huddle with the bowler and offer words of encouragement, with Siraj patting him on the back. With shoulders almost visibly drooping, Ravi Kiran opted to play safe, bowling slower balls in the channel to get a quiet over in.Siraj came back for his third over. Perhaps expecting a shorter one, Shaw hung back to the second delivery. It thudded in full and it was ball hitting bat rather than the other way round. The bat flew out of Shaw’s hands, and he was clutching his shoulder again. If Siraj thought he had won, there was one final act left, and the over ended with three short balls going for 6, 6, 4. Siraj’s effort and fury should have got him Shaw’s wicket, now it worked against him, with Shaw ready to pounce, and the balls not rising quite as high either. The last shot took Shaw to his half-century, making it the fourth time in four innings in this tournament that he had passed the milestone. The scorecard will show that Shaw took 29 runs off the 14 balls he faced from Siraj. Scorecards don’t always capture the whole story – but perhaps the watching selectors might have.

BCCI panel wraps up hearings after Johri, two complainants depose

The two women complainants, neither of whom is part of the BCCI, deposed over Skype in the past few days

Nagraj Gollapudi14-Nov-2018BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri, who is facing sexual harassment allegations, has testified before the independent inquiry committee investigating the issue, as have two women who have levelled those allegations against him. Johri’s deposition is understood to have been spread over ten hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. He was the last person to be heard by the three-member committee and is understood to have presented a lot of “records” in his defence to counter the accusations. The two women complainants, neither of whom is part of the BCCI, deposed over Skype in the past few days. Both women – who live overseas – had alleged misconduct by Johri in their emails to the three-member committee comprising Rakesh Sharma (retired judge of Allahabad High Court), Barkha Singh (former chairperson of the Delhi Women’s Commission) and Veena Gowda (human rights activist). It is understood that one of the women is a friend of former Mumbai captain Shishir Hattangadi, who testified in person on Monday. The woman had sought Hattangadi’s help to reach out to the Committee of Administrators (CoA), which was appointed as the supervisory authority of BCCI by the Supreme Court last year.Although no detail of the misconduct has come out, after hearing her out, Hattangadi had thought her complaint was “authentic” and put her in touch with CoA member Diana Edulji. The second complainant is understood to have worked with Johri at a media organisation before he joined the BCCI. That makes it three women, all three outside of BCCI, who have accused Johri of sexual misconduct. The first allegation had surfaced on October 12 when an unknown person narrated an incident of sexual misconduct against her by Johri several years ago. The details of the incident were revealed through a post on Twitter by verified account of a person, who subsequently said that she did not want to talk about the issue anymore. The inquiry committee, which had already heard Vinod Rai, Edulji, Anirudh Chaudhry (BCCI treasurer), Neeraj Kumar (former head of BCCI’s anti-corruption unit) Hattangadi and whistleblower Aditya Verma, has not, however, heard or contacted the woman BCCI employee, who was on the verge of quitting earlier this year over alleged harassment by Johri. The CoA, which was made aware of the issue late February, had moved the woman employee out of Johri’s team to the another department with a new reporting head.In his desposition, Chaudhry is understood to have told the inquiry committee that the CoA had handled this “internal case badly.” The committee then asked Chaudhry why the BCCI had not formed a sexual harassment cell in the first place until the CoA formed it eventually this April when a four-member internal complaints committee was formed in line with Sexual Harassment against Women at Workplace Act 2013 (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal). The inquiry committee will now retire to evaluate all material – both the depositions as well as all the written communications – before issuing its own order. The CoA had given a fortnight to the inquiry committee from the day it took charge (October 30) to reach a conclusion. However, if it needs further time, the CoA has told the inquiry committee it will be flexible.

Insiders "convinced" Spurs are preparing bid for "underrated" star

Insiders at a rival club are believed to be "convinced" that Tottenham are "lining up a bid" to sign one of their top transfer targets.

Lange at work behind the scenes

After arriving from Aston Villa on 1st November, new sporting director Johan Lange has officially got to work on identifying Spurs transfer targets for the winter window.

As now confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou in a press conference on Friday (via football.london), plans are "well away" ahead of January and Lange is personally leading the charge for new Spurs signings.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

"I guess the challenge for us was they all came at once as it hasn't been staggered," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's injury problems, going on to share an update on their transfer plans.

"In terms of January, the planning is well away with that. Johan [Lange] has come in and he's leading that in terms of all the background work.

"My involvement and my own sort of ramp up to it as we get closer to January and understanding exactly what our requirements are at the moment, although work has been done in the background with Johan leading it and he's brought in some people to help him in that area. We'll work with him when the time is right."

Lange could move for "massive" £60m defender after Spurs meeting this week

There’s been internal discussions ahead of January.

The north Londoners were already linked to signing a new left-sided centre-back long before Lange, with Tottenham especially eager to bolster that area of the squad after Micky van de Ven's injury.

Spurs are targeting Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth as one example, while the agent of Genoa star Radu Dragusin revealed Tottenham talks over signing the defender this week.

“I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams," said Dragusin's representative Florin Manea to Fanatik.

Genoa defender Radu Dragusin.

"We are getting closer. I spoke with Newcastle, with Arsenal, with Tottenham. I also have the messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask."

Meanwhile, there have been murmurs of Spurs eyeing a new winger and, potentially, a striker to replace Harry Kane further down the line in 2024.

Club insiders expect Spurs bid for Toney

Brentford star Ivan Toney is one of the linked options, coming after he scored 20 goals in the Premier League alone last season.

According to The Sun, Chelsea insiders are "convinced" Spurs will move for Toney, though Postecoglou's side deny this themselves.

Ivan Toney

Indeed, the west Londoners have a real belief that Tottenham are "lining up a bid" for the 27-year-old, who is actually one of Chelsea's top targets to solve their own striker woes.

Stamford Bridge chiefs are apparently braced for a three-way battle for Toney's services, with Arsenal also among the contenders.

Ricardo Pepi, Joe Scally, Brenden Aaronson & the USMNT stars who would be better off playing at the Olympics than going to Copa America

Several familiar faces could really benefit from a trip to France as the U.S. looks to map out a busy summer

If you want to have some fun, choosing a fantasy U.S. U-23 men's national team squad for the upcoming Olympics is an entertaining exercise. There are simply so many options and so many good players that could feature in Paris this summer.

Yunus Musah has said he wants to play at the Olympics. So too has Folarin Balogun. Gio Reyna is also age-eligible and there's room for three overage players that could be used on, say, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams. In an ideal world, the U.S. could bring one heck of a squad to France this summer.

It isn't an ideal world, though. The USMNT's priority is the Copa America, the big test on the road to the 2026 World Cup. That's not diminishing the Olympics by any means but, generally, the U.S. focus will be on competing against South America's best this summer as hosts of that tournament.

Players could pull double duty, but those will be special cases. By and large, it's expected that the U.S. will work with two different squads: one for the Copa and one for the Olympic Games. That Olympic squad, though, could have plenty of familiar faces as there are players both young and old that could really benefit the U-23 team.

From veterans who can provide leadership to rising stars who can use the minutes, the U.S. can go any number of ways. And, with that in mind, GOAL takes a look at which USMNT stars would be better off joining the U-23s this summer.

Getty ImagesThose already involved

The most recent U.S. U-23 camp was filled with players who have already earned senior caps. It's logical, then, that most, if not all, of those players would continue through the Olympics if everything goes to plan.

Fullbacks John Tolkin and Kevin Paredes have very real cases to be the USMNT's backup left-back, but both are better served with the U-23s. So too are goalkeepers Patrick Schulte and Gaga Slonina, although the latter wasn't involved in the most recent camp due to injury.

Gianluca Busio, Cade Cowell, Aidan Morris and Bryan Reynolds all have legitimate U.S. experience, but all will likely start for this team in the Olympics. Paxten Aaronson, Caleb Wiley, Diego Luna and Esmir Bajraktarevic have all earned senior looks, too.

It's a good thing, really. Years ago, a U.S. U-23 team would have been littered with college kids. These days, it's a group with real senior experience for club and country as they head towards the Olympic Games.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRicardo Pepi

Pepi's agent is already speaking of a big summer. He's made a fuss of Pepi's lack of playing time at PSV and, if nothing changes, Pepi could be on the move yet again this summer.

Well, if Pepi wants to be in the shop window, scoring boatloads of goals at the Olympics would be a good way to attract potential suitors.

Pepi has been good for PSV this season, albeit in a bench role behind Luuk de Jong. He's a fantastic striker who has a case to start for the USMNT. The big problem is that he isn't the only one with a case, as Folarin Balogun, Josh Sargent and Haji Wright can also make a very real argument to be the U.S. No. 9.

Of that foursome, only Pepi and Balogun are age-eligible for the Olympics and, of those two, Pepi makes the most sense. He seems like he'd be, at best, a bench option for the senior team at the Copa. With the Olympic squad, he could be one of the better strikers in the whole tournament.

It may be a tough pill to swallow, particularly after missing the 2022 World Cup, but a dip down to the U-23s could do wonders for Pepi's development.

Getty ImagesBrandon Vazquez

If Pepi doesn't go, the U.S. could use an overage spot for a striker. As things stand, Duncan McGuire is the guy at the U-23 level, but you'll almost certainly need two strong strikers to really compete for this thing.

Vazquez seems like a perfect option, should it come to that. He's lighting it up at Monterrey, having scored nine goals in 18 games. He's a big, physical presence with plenty of touch. At this U-23 level, he could be a legitimate bully.

Right now, Vazquez seems locked into that second tier of strikers behind those mentioned above. It's hard to imagine him making it to the Copa America unless there are a few injuries in front of him. An Olympic run, then, could be his best chance to impress the USMNT brass.

Getty ImagesJoe Scally

Scally is almost certainly not going to start at the Copa America. Sergino Dest is entrenched on the right, as Antonee Robinson is on the left. When given chances to really make his case, Scally has fallen somewhat short. Right now, he's a backup.

He's also age-eligible for the Olympics. The U-23s already have Reynolds as a starting right-back, but could Scally benefit more from getting those minutes in France?

Borussia Monchengladbach may not release him, but it's certainly worth considering. Another tournament on the bench may not do too much for Scally. He played zero minutes at the World Cup and, if all goes to plan, there won't be many minutes on offer at the Copa either.

A significant runout with the U-23s could be a good confidence boost for a player who is thriving in the Bundesliga. Best of all, there's no real downside due to his age, making this something of a no-brainer.

Kane once again came back to haunt Arsenal as the former Tottenham man scored from the spot in their quarter-final Champions League clash with Thomas Tuchel's men on Tuesday. Unbeknownst to many, the 30-year-old's wife, Kate Goodland, was in the home end with Gunners fans at the Emirates Stadium and captured the moment he converted his penalty cautiously as the stand fell silent. She also sent a short and sweet message on Instagram to the England captain.

The result keeps alive Bayern's chances of winning some major silverware this year after crashing out of the DFB-Pokal Cup earlier on this season and being cut adrift by Bundesliga's runaway leaders Bayer Leverkusen. Rohit Sharma believes that the 3-0 whitewash of West Indies has completely prepared the Indian white-ball side for their tour of Australia which begins in nine days. After Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant scored match-winning half-centuries on Sunday, India’s stand-in captain told reporters that they were “high on confidence” to take on the Australian challenge that kicks off with a three-game T20I series.”It was important from the team’s perspective for the players to get some runs ahead of the important Australia tour,” Rohit said. “Shikhar was batting well in the ODI series. He was not able to get big scores. He was getting 30s and 40s, but I am glad that he could play a match-winning knock today and get some form under his belt before the crucial tour. Rishabh was also hungry to go out and get some runs. It was the perfect situation today.”When you win a series like this, you are high on confidence and it is all about taking that confidence there. Australia will be a different ball-game, and I completely understand that. But I think the things we have been doing as a team, we have to keep repeating the same thing we have been doing.”

All I am thinking is going back, taking few days off, and take the flight to Australia. If I try and stay in present, it works for meRohit Sharma on his return to the Test side

India will, once again, be without MS Dhoni for the T20Is in Australia but Rohit backed Dinesh Karthik, the wicketkeeper during the West Indies T20Is, to keep coming good. In any case, they aren’t short of options behind the stumps with Pant and KL Rahul both part of the squad.”MS [Dhoni] not being in a team is a miss for any team,” Rohit said. “But I have played with Dinesh in Mumbai Indians when I was captain. We understand each other really well. His thought behind the stumps is important, like any other wicketkeeper.”Dinesh’s input has been important – on how the pitch is doing and the angle where the fielders are. Small little things like that. Dinesh has been helpful. He is also the skipper of one of the IPL franchises [Kolkata Knight Riders], and that really helps.”The West Indies series also gave India an opportunity to test Krunal Pandya in international cricket. Already a vital cog in the IPL for Mumbai Indians, the 27-year old allrounder played a match-winning innings on debut, and was also tidy with the ball, giving away only 78 runs in 72 balls across three games.”Krunal is a street-smart cricketer,” Rohit said. “He is never afraid of going and bowling to any batsman whether the batsman is set, whether it is a left-hander who is set. We have seen that when he played the IPL.Rohit Sharma guides the ball towards the leg side•Associated Press”I am quite impressed with how he approached these three internationals. He has got a great ability to play for India for a long period of time, only because he can also bat. You have seen how he finished the first game. He came and played shots which were not expected from a debutant, but he is fearless, just like his brother.”At the end of the day, you need characters in the team like Krunal and Hardik who are not afraid of expressing themselves. I don’t like to mention one or two players. All the players have different characters and, at different point of time, they have raised their hands and taken responsibility.”The greatest positive from the series, according to Rohit, was India’s fielding, and he led the way himself, with three sharp catches in the second T20I. “There was going to be a question mark on our fielding after a long home season that we have played. We ticked a lot of boxes but I am especially happy how we fielded. Batting and bowling, there will be mistakes and good performances but I was particularly happy with our fielding.”Rohit, however, brushed aside his own personal ambitions for a place in India’s XI for the Australia Tests, opting to play down the hype around his return to the Test squad after being axed midway through the South Africa series in January this year.”I am not thinking about the Test match. I am someone who doesn’t think too far ahead. All I am thinking is going back, taking few days off, and take the flight to Australia,” he said. “If I try and stay in present, it works for me.”Test matches are something I was looking forward [to] for a long time. It will be a nice to go out there and play a Test match for India. As a batsman, I don’t think about my past performances. Every game is a new game. Every time I go out there in the middle, I keep things simple. This game is simple if you keep it simple. If you overthink, it can get complicated. So it is important to stay in [the] present. It is important to start well in Australia and then, take it from there.”India play their first T20I at the Gabba on November 21, after which the series moves on to Melbourne and Sydney. Then comes a four-Test series before the tour finally winds down with three ODIs starting January 12.
