Liverpool fans fume at Robertson latest

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after Andy Robertson was ruled out of the vital clash with Chelsea next month through suspension.

The Reds enjoyed a memorable win over Leicester City on Wednesday evening, making it into the Carabao Cup semi-finals in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s men left it late to draw 3-3 with the Foxes at Anfield before Diogo Jota fired home the winning penalty after a tense shootout.

One player who was unavailable for the game was Robertson, who was serving the first of a three-match ban after his red card against Tottenham last weekend.

Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Leeds United on Boxing Day has now been postponed however, which means the Scot will still be unavailable for the trip to Chelsea on January 2nd instead, as confirmed by James Pearce on Twitter.

Evans shines as Northants triumph

Luke Evans and Jack Brooks took three wickets apiece as Northamptonshire bowled out Gloucestershire for 249 to complete a 94-run victory in their County Championship Division Two match at Bristol

17-Apr-2010
ScorecardLuke Evans and Jack Brooks took three wickets apiece as Northamptonshire bowled out Gloucestershire for 249 to complete a 94-run victory in their County Championship Division Two match at Bristol.Evans, in his first game since joining Northants on a month’s loan from Durham, claimed the wickets of Alex Gidman, Chris Taylor and Gemaal Hussain as Gloucestershire, who started the day on 85 for 2, never threatened to get the 344 required to win.Evans finished with three for 53, while Brooks accounted for Hamish Marshall, Jon Lewis and Steve Snell in his return of three for 55. Snell top-scored for Gloucestershire with 52 and his last-wicket partnership of59 with Steve Kirby (22 not out) was the highest of the innings. In perfect batting conditions, Gloucestershire must have fancied their chances of getting close to their target, but the loss of two wickets in the opening nine overs of the day meant it was always an uphill struggle. Kadeer Ali had not added to his overnight 29 when he was bowled by David Lucas, and Marshall departed for 27 when he snicked a delivery from Brooks to Andrew Hall at first slip.Evans struck with his fourth ball of the day when Gloucestershire skipper Gidman edged a drive into the hands of Hall. Three overs later, Hall enjoyed success with the ball when James Franklin played over the top of a full-length delivery and was bowled.Taylor offered a few defiant blows, most notably a hooked six behind square off Evans but the paceman had his revenge next ball when Taylor was caught by Stephen Peters at extra cover for 31.Evans had more to celebrate in his next over when Hussain gloved a legside catch to wicketkeeper Paul Harrison, which made it 179 for 8.Snell hooked Hall for six over long-leg and Jon Lewis greeted the introduction of Brooks into the attack by hitting him for four through extra cover. Lewis, though, was dismissed next ball when he got a thin-edge to a ball from Brooks and Harrison took the low catch.Gloucestershire took lunch on 197 for 9 and Snell and Kirby managed to prolong the game by nearly 11 overs after the interval. Kirby brought up the 200 by straight-driving Brooks for three, while Snell hit the same bowler for four through wide long-on and lofted a delivery from David Lucas over the midwicket rope for six.Evans returned to the attack in the 68th over and nearly wrapped up the match with his second ball. But Snell, on 40, was reprieved when Mal Loye spilled a waist-high chance at gully. Snell progressed to a 58-ball half-century before Brooks had him leg before to bring the match to an end.Northamptonshire will be delighted to have bounced back from last week’s defeat by Leicestershire, while Gloucestershire will hope to fare better when Sussex visit Bristol later this week.

Raina more than capable of handling short ball – Fleming

Stephen Fleming has attributed Suresh Raina’s impressive show in the IPL and the ongoing World Twenty20 to his determination and effort to combat his weakness against the short ball

Cricinfo staff05-May-2010Stephen Fleming, the Chennai Super Kings coach, has attributed Suresh Raina’s impressive show in the IPL and the ongoing World Twenty20 to his determination and effort to combat his weakness against the short ball, which was exposed in England last year. Raina was the third-highest run-getter in the IPL and was the Man of the Match in the final, which Chennai won. He followed that up with a 59-ball century against South Africa in St Lucia to seal India’s place in the Super Eights.”He knew that he would be attacked with short balls and I felt he is more than equipped to deal with it,” Fleming told . “I just had to make him realise his strengths. He went on to turn the so-called weakness into his strength.”We have worked out plans on the areas where we thought he might be attacked. He tried hard at the nets with rising balls to make the right adjustments. He is a hard trier.”The adjustments Raina has had to make have not affected his strengths, Fleming said. “That’s what good players do. Improvement in one area cannot be allowed to lead to deterioration in another area.”Fleming also credited Gary Kirsten for Raina’s improvement and said his own role had been to concentrate on the mental aspect of Raina’s game. “Suresh has been working on this with Gary Kirsten. My duty has been to facilitate and organise the facilities needed for him to work on those areas. More specifically I worked on the mental part of Suresh and his Twenty20 game. I’ve advised him on what frame of mind he should be in a Twenty20 format.”Success breeds confidence. The range of shots he plays is a kind of expression of himself. He is able to play them because of his new-found confidence. His level of confidence matches his abilities. He is very positive and is not afraid of playing shots.”He is very hard to bowl to I’d imagine. At this stage, Suresh is well ahead of his age in cricket. I was not even half as talented at that stage.”

Leeds: Whelan reacts to possible Bamford boost

Leeds United pundit Noel Whelan believes having Patrick Bamford available against Burnley ‘could be massive’, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Bamford in line for return?

Bamford has endured an injury-hit campaign so far this season, making just six Premier League appearances.

He made a brief return from an ankle problem at the beginning of December but suffered a hamstring issue after celebrating his stoppage-time equaliser against Brentford.

However, Marcelo Bielsa refused to rule Bamford out of the scheduled Liverpool game on Boxing Day after the 4-1 defeat to Arsenal.

On that basis, it seems as if Bamford could be in line for a return to the squad for their next fixture now with even more recovery time under his belt, with Whelan giving his thoughts.

The Latest: Whelan’s comments

Whelan, who contributes for BBC Radio Leeds, was talking to Football Insider about the club’s injury issues.

He name-checked Bamford when talking about injuries, labelling a possible return against Burnley on January 2 as ‘massive’.

“It’s been unfortunate.

“It’s given an opportunity to those players who were on the fringes of coming back, like Bamford.

“They’ve had that bit of extra time to get themselves right and be part of the squad for these games. That could be massive. Especially for the Burnley game.

“It’s no secret that we’ve missed a lot of players over this Christmas period. It will be nice to get back to a nearly fully-fit squad for the remainder of the season.”

The Verdict: Needed…

Leeds’ options from the bench against Arsenal were all Under-23 players, with youngsters Cody Drameh and Joe Gelhardt even starting.

Bielsa is down to the bare bones, especially with the recent Covid-19 outbreak at the club, so having Bamford available against Burnley, even if it is from the bench, could be huge.

Hopefully the 28-year-old is just one of a number of players to make returns at Elland Road on Sunday, and who knows, the club could look back at the recent postponements against Liverpool and Aston Villa as a blessing in disguise.

Franklin ends Sussex's unbeaten run

Sussex slid to their first defeat of the Friends Provident t20 campaign and missed their chance of setting a new domestic record of 14 successive Twenty20 wins

16-Jun-2010
ScorecardSussex slid to their first defeat of the Friends Provident t20 campaign and missed their chance of setting a new domestic record of 14 successive Twenty20 wins as Gloucestershire caused an eight-run upset under the lights at Hove.In the absence of their England one-day stars Luke Wright and skipper Michael Yardy, the previously unbeaten South Group leaders blew hot and cold on a chilly night on the south coast – allowing the Gladiators, inspired by James Franklin’s career-best 90, to chalk up their second win.Chasing down Gloucestershire’s impressive 178 for 4, Sussex were restricted to 170 for 9 after failing to cash in on two strokes of good fortune early in the reply when both home openers received a life from successive deliveries. Matt Prior saw Hamish Marshall fail to hold on at deep square and then, from the next ball from Steve Kirby, Brendon McCullum was downed by the same fielder at point. With his dander up, Kirby sent Prior packing for 17 with a yorker, but McCullum made slightly more of his let-off by cracking seven fours and a six in a 28-ball cameo for 46 that ended when he swept a flat catch to Kadeer Ali at deep square leg off the bowling of Vikram Banerjee.Needing 93 from their last 10 overs, Sussex lost Murray Goodwin to a sliced drive to cover and then crucially big-hitting Dwayne Smith, who lofted to deep square-leg where Marshall made amends for his earlier blunders. Chris Nash, in looking for a single, was run out by bowler Anthony Ireland when following through and, two balls later, Ireland had Andrew Hodd caught behind to finish with three for 35 as Sharks lost their way in their frantic quest for late runs.Having been inserted by Sharks’ acting captain Goodwin, Gloucestershire promoted pace bowler Jonathan Lewis to pinch hit and he responded with three boundaries in 10 balls before being yorked by Chad Keegan. Franklin and Marshall teamed up to post the Gladiators’ 50 within seven overs. In a contrasting, little-and-large second-wicket stand worth 91 in 63 balls, it was tall left-hander Franklin who proved the major aggressor. He hit the first six of the night onto a car bonnet off Will Beer after nine overs and then lofted one from Nash over long-on in the next over to reach his 1,000-run milestone in t20 matches. Marshall improvised effectively, dabbing one from James Kirtley to the third man boundary to take Gloucestershire’s total into three figures. He then crashed a length ball from Smith through cover to move to 37 from 33 balls, only to lose his leg stump to Smith’s next delivery. Franklin cracked on to a 32-ball 50 with five fours and a brace of sixes, but lost Chris Taylor when he miscued a pull shot into the deep.Without once slogging, 29-year-old Franklin continued to make rapid progress with 90 from 50 balls. Unfurling measured, textbook strokes he garnered 11 fours and three sixes – the last of which broke his bat as he dispatched a Keegan slow-ball bouncer out of the park.Keegan had his revenge in pegging back Franklin’s off stump in the penultimate over, yet their testing asking rate of nine an over proved too much for the Sharks

Tottenham decide to sell Steven Bergwijn

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have decided to sell Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window, amidst interest from various clubs.

The Lowdown: Bergwijn has not secured himself in Conte’s 11

Since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven two years ago, the Dutchman has not yet reached the heights he would have hoped for when he agreed to his £27m move to the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The winger has started just once in all competitions under Antonio Conte and played a mere 100 minutes under the current manager. Overall, he has made 64 appearances for Spurs, but his returns leave something to be desired, having produced 10 assists and just five goals during that time.

The Latest: Tottenham have decided to sell

According to Romano on Twitter, Tottenham have finally concluded that they will sell Bergwijn this month, following interest from various European clubs.

Ajax are already thought to have submitted an offer to Spurs for the winger, which would see him join on a permanent deal. However, nothing is yet agreed between the two clubs, as talks are expected to continue to be held by Fabio Paratici.

Therefore, Romano claims that the pursuit of Bergwijn remains an ‘open race’.

The Verdict: Needs playing time elsewhere to flourish

Previous Tottenham managers have been complimentary of Bergwijn. Nuno Espirito Santo accentuated the 24-year-old’s importance to the squad, claiming that ‘he’s a very talented player’. Even Conte has been full of praise for the Netherlands international, highlighting his evident ‘quality’ and saying that ‘he’s quick and he can score goals’.

However, even accounting for some injuries, the 52-year-old has not given Bergwijn much chance to flourish at Spurs this season. If the winger wants to secure a spot in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad later this year, the best option may well be to secure first team football elsewhere, as it currently seems that he will receive minimal game-time at Tottenham with Conte at the helm.

Five-star Finn hurries England win

Plays of the day from day five of the first Test between England and Bangladesh at at Lord’s

Andrew Miller at Lord's31-May-2010Catch of the day
England were a frustrated outfit in the first half-hour of play. With the ball hooping nicely under overcast skies, they believed that a breakthrough was only a matter of time, but with Shakib Al Hasan and Junaid Siddique getting into line to each and every delivery, the overs were ticking by and the vital shine on the new ball was being scuffed with every delivery. But then, at last, from what Michael Vaughan declared on air to be the “worst ball of the morning”, Steven Finn offered up a long-hop outside off stump, and Shakib cracked it fiercely out to point, where Eoin Morgan barely had time to react. The ball, however, popped up invitingly off the base of his palms and was snatched at the second attempt.Bowler of the day
Once again Steven Finn’s height, pace and accuracy proved to be an irresistible combination for a Bangladesh batting line-up that battled hard but lost wickets in clusters whenever their opponents got on a roll. In the first innings, Finn had come within a whisker of a five-wicket haul, only for James Anderson to sweep through the lower-order and deny him his place on the honours board. Second time around, however, Finn got the rewards for his endeavours with 5 for 87, and he might well have become the first England bowler since Ian Botham in 1978 to make his mark on the ten-wicket board, had his strange habit of falling over in his followthrough not persuaded Andrew Strauss to save his 6’7″ frame from self-harm. MCC were relieved that he did so – back in April, an online promotion had offered a full refund in the event of any bowler taking ten wickets, and Lord’s was looking at a £42,000 dent in their coffers had Finn claimed one more scalp.Aberration of the day
Perhaps Bangladesh already felt that the chance of the draw had gone, but the manner in which their innings ended was soft in the extreme. Mahmudullah, a man with a Test century to his name, had batted with aplomb for 48 deliveries, and with the No. 11, Robiul Islam, camped at the other end, he needed to see out five more balls to take his team through to lunch, a vital milestone in their bid for a rare Test draw. But when Tim Bresnan banged in a short ball, Mahmudullah couldn’t resist having an airy mow, and Matt Prior behind the stumps clung onto a thin top-edge. It meant that England were left with exactly two sessions in which to chase 160. Had the final pair been able to extend the target up towards 200, their bowlers might just have had a chance to exert some control.Image of the day
On a Bank Holiday Monday, with a wonderfully (and let’s be honest, unexpectedly) entertaining Test match heading into its decisive final day, the marketing folk at Lord’s came up with a masterstroke. By announcing that tickets for the final day would be £10 for adults and free for kids and OAPs, they lured the undecided masses out of their houses, with some 9200 people queuing for half a mile down the Wellington Road to gain entry. What is more, those that made the effort were rewarded with a rare treat, the chance to wander on the hallowed turf, no less, during the lunch break. It was speculated that this was the first occasion that the crowd had been invited onto the field during an ongoing Lord’s Test since play was interrupted by a bomb scare back in 1973. But in other parts of the world, including South Africa and New Zealand, such scenes are a regular and welcome feature of the Test experience. Let’s hope it sets a similar precedent here.Innings of the day
Despite making a healthy impression with the bat, Andrew Strauss hasn’t had the most enjoyable of returns to the helm. His captaincy seemed off the pace during Bangladesh’s spells of dominance with the bat, and it’s hard to escape the feeling that he regrets taking his hand off the tiller during an eventful start to 2010. But on the final afternoon, he enjoyed a bit of a release, wrapping up the Test with a free-flowing 82. The first ball of the innings, from Shahadat Hossain, was cut ruthlessly for four, and after 11 deliveries he was cruising on 20 not out. A century might just have been within reach as the end of the match drew nigh, but in his haste to seal the deal before tea, he snicked a thin edge to the keeper.Finale of the day
Strauss’s dismissal did at least give the crowd the chance to see a quick cameo from Kevin Pietersen, and he didn’t undersell the theatrics. After arriving to a standing ovation, KP was quickly into his stride, cracking consecutive boundaries through square leg and backward point, before striding forward into an exaggerated forward defensive, to loud “oohs” from the stands and a broad chuckle from Strauss on the balcony. A single stole the strike and brought the scores level, but a brilliant over from Shakib tied him to the crease and robbed him of the moment of glory. By rights, tea should have been taken at that point, but Billy Bowden rightly allowed common sense to prevail, and it was Jonathan Trott who whipped the winning boundary through midwicket.

Man Utd fans react to Diallo’s Derby links

Wayne Rooney’s Derby County are among the clubs hoping to take Manchester United’s Amad Diallo on loan, according to The Telegraph’s James Ducker.

The Red Devils are set to send the 19-year-old out on loan, and the club’s record goalscorer is hopeful that his connections at Old Trafford will prove to be a decisive advantage, as the Rams are facing competition from fellow second tier sides Barnsley and Birmingham City.

Ducker said that Diallo was ‘supposed’ to join Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord in the summer, only for the move to be called off after an injury.

Why are United loaning Diallo out?

The Ivorian winger, who joined the Old Trafford club 12 months ago in a £19m move from Atalanta, has only played 68 minutes of senior football this season. That came in United’s final Champions League group stage fixture against Young Boys, while he has only once made the matchday squad for a Premier League fixture, the 3-2 win over Arsenal in early December.

Fan feed Utd Report relayed Ducker’s update, and here’s how supporters reacted, with many Red Devils fans believing that a loan move to play under Rooney at Derby would be perfect for the “starboy”.

Celtic: Journalist makes Hannes Wolf claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has addressed Celtic’s interest in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Hannes Wolf, Give Me Sport report.

The Lowdown: McGree move breaks down

The Hoops have already brought in four players during the January transfer window, two of which have been midfielders in Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ange Postecoglou seemingly wants more, though, as it appeared as if he would be getting another in Riley McGree. However, talks broke down over personal terms, with the Aussie now set to join Championship side Middlesbrough.

Celtic were linked with a move for Wolf prior to the saga with McGree, and O’Rourke has been having his say on a possible swoop for the Austrian.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke was talking to Give Me Sport regarding Celtic’s interest in Wolf, claiming that Postecoglou is a ‘big admirer’ of the midfielder.

“Wolf has been a long-term target for Celtic.

“Ange Postecoglou is reportedly a big admirer of him and it seems he doesn’t really figure in Monchengladbach’s plans going forward.”

The Verdict: Loan move?

The £12.5m-rated attacking midfielder can also play on either wing, so he could be a shrewd addition with David Turnbull ruled out for two months through injury.

A loan deal is thought to be possible for Wolf, and if the Hoops can include an option to buy within a temporary transfer, it would give them the power in the summer.

Wolf has featured just once in Monchengladbach’s last 12 Bundesliga fixtures, however, should he replicate his 2018/19 form with RB Salzburg where he contributed to 15 goals in 22 games, it could be a wise move with the versatile midfielder still just 22 years of age.

That gave Durham four specialist seamers and a lengthy tail, but Thorp andChris Rushworth played some handsome strokes in making 29 and 26, while MitchClaydon contributed 18.Durham’s selection hinted that the pitch would favour the seamers, which washardly surprising after Warwickshire’s Imran Tahir became the first spinner totake eight wickets in an innings against them at Edgbaston a month ago.He had to settle for two today, his googly having Phil Mustard caught at slipfor 35 after a sixth-wicket stand of 91, while Thorp became over confident andwas stumped. The ball swung in the morning, but there was also enough in the pitch toencourage the bowlers to bang a few in and Gordon Muchall, Ben Stokes andRushworth all fell when pulling, while Neil Carter found extra bounce to haveMark Stoneman taken at second slip.Michael Di Venuto pulled the first ball of the match in front of mid-wicket forfour off Carter, who then swung one away to have the left-hander caught behindin the third over, although the Australian did not look happy with thedecision.Dale Benkenstein joined Muchall at 21 for 2 and while the senior man dug inhis partner made 27 before his top-edged pull off Rikki Clarke was athleticallyheld by Boyd Rankin.
