It was good old-fashioned Test cricket on the second day – an examination of patience, will andconcentration – and Kumar Sangakkara kept Sri Lanka’s nose ahead with a patient century. After Chaminda Vaas and Sangakkara had frustrated India in the first session, the Indian spinners fought back in the middle, drying up the runs and getting importantwickets as a result, but they were denied by a rock-solid Sangakkara, and to alesser extent by the inconsistent umpiring when it came to reviews.Sangakkara’s hundred competed with the review decision that went ThilanSamaraweera’s way as the talking point of the day. India had takentwo wickets, those of Vaas and Mahela Jayawardene, for four runs to reduce Sri Lankato 141 for 4, and should have made it three for 16 when Kumble’s appeal foran lbw against Samaraweera was rejected. In live time, it seemed there mighthave been an inside edge before the ball hit pad, but the replays clearly showed the ball hit the pad first. The impact was 40% inside the mat – as it was with Rahul Dravid when he was given out yesterday – and the ball would have gone on to hit the middle stump three-fourths of the way up. For some reason, though, the original decision was upheld, which left the Indians irate. Sachin Tendulkar, who had injured his elbow earlier, even signalled “out” from the dressing room. Samaraweera was on 5, then, andwent on to score 35, and more importantly, put together a 60-run partnershipwith Sangakkara at a crucial juncture.Nothing should take away from Sangakkara, though, who curbed his stroke-playing instincts, realising that his wicket would have been critical. He made a dicey start in the morning with an uppish boundary past a diving Rohit Sharma at point, but was determined to make amends for his ordinary series till then. Before this Test, his average in 2008 was close to 24. Twice in the previous Tests, Zaheer Khan had caught him in the crease, making him play at legcutters. This time, though, Sangakkara consciouslygot on to the front foot, especially against Zaheer. Once he saw Zaheer off, there were no signs of struggle, and he was severe on anything loose.A big chance arrived for India when Sangakkara, on 34 then, edged a faster onefrom Kumble, but Rahul Dravid failed to latch on to what would have been aspectacular slip catch. To rub salt in, Sangakkara came up with an exquisitecover-drive off Harbhajan in the next over. The run machineKumar Sangakkara’s unbeaten 107 was his second Test hundred against India. His first came during India’s previous visit in 2001.It was also Sangakkara’s second ton at the P Sara Stadium, where he presently averages over 100.Sangakkara’s Test average of 55.39 is the best among Sri Lankan batsmen who have played more than one Test. He scores over 85 runs per innings when playing as a specialist batsman.Starting with his 287 against South Africa in July 2006, his highest score, Sangakkara averages an astounding 97.84 in 26 innings. With the 17th run of his 107, Sangakkara became only the third batsman to score 2000 runs without being bowled in a Test innings. Sangakkara was last out bowled in April 2006, and has not been dismissed in that manner ever since. Shivanarine Chanderpaul and Javed Miandad are the two others to achieve this feat. Read more on Chanderpaul in the It Figures blog. After lunch India came out determined to make runs hard to get. In the firstsession Sri Lanka had managed 100, while in the first 11 overs of thesecond they got only 23. Harbhajan kept bowling outside off, whileKumble – from round the stumps – got purchase from the pitch. Vaas, thenight-watchman who took ownership of the house in the first session, wasstrangled: he survived two close calls in one Kumble over, and inHarbhajan’s next, lobbed an easy catch to extra cover, falling two runs short of achieving the double of 3000 runs and 300 wickets. Harbhajan thenbeat Jayawardene with an offbreak, and for once Jayawardene got the reviewcall wrong. He was given out lbw and that’s how it stayed. That was when Sangakkara dug deeper, not falling for India’s tactics, scoring 27 runs in the middle session. Bar one shot, he was a picture ofdiscipline. Even that shot was perhaps a statement – I can hit those, but Idon’t want to. To a full, wide offbreak from Harbhajan – a similar one hadbeen called wide earlier – Sangakkara went down on one knee and swept tomidwicket for four. As he approached his 17th century, the Indians kept gettingmeaner on him. In moving from 76 to 99, he took 56 balls, and hit only one boundary.India suffered injury setbacks through the day. VVS Laxman had twisted his ankle in fielding practice before the start of the play and didn’t take the field. After tea Ishant Sharma became the third casualty when he tumbled during his follow-though, not for the first time in the series, hurt his hip, and had to go off the field. Still, the bowlers put up a brave show overall. TheHarbhajan-Kumble duo worked well in the middle session, and Zaheer bowled atesting spell after tea, giving away 21 runs in eight overs and eventuallygetting Samaraweera out with a delivery that bounced and left the batsman.Tillakaratne Dilshan, as usual, came out full of intent, and in partnership withSangakkara started to break free. For 12 overs at one pointtowards stumps, Sri Lanka didn’t score a boundary, getting only 27 runs, butonce Dilshan cut loose things began to look ominous for India. But Kumble, unfortunate not to have got a wicket till then, struck at the right timewith a topspinner. Dilshan asked for the review, but he had been caught plumb. Given the tendency of lower orders to collapse dramatically, and also that Sri Lanka have to bat last, it would be brave to say that Sri Lanka have a clear advantage.

Liverpool fans dislike Saul Niguez update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting angrily to an update regarding the Reds’ pursuit of Saul Niguez, with a move for the Spaniard looking unlikely.

Jurgen Klopp has had a relatively quiet summer transfer window to date, with Ibrahima Konate the only signing made thus far.

Gini Wijnaldum’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain has left a void in the middle of the park, however, and it would be a surprise if he isn’t replaced.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

With Jordan Henderson and Thiago both in their 30s, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain injury-prone and Curtis Jones still learning, an addition in midfield wouldn’t go amiss.

One player who has been linked with a move to Liverpool is Atletico Madrid hero Saul, but the Daily Mail have claimed [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] that they are ‘unlikely to buy’ the 26-year-old, whose tackling average of 1.7 per game last season was bettered by only three players at Anfield.

Imran Ali hat-trick gives SNGPL the edge

On a day when 16 wickets tumbled, the honours rested with Imran Ali, Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited’s (SNGPL) right-arm seamer, who took a hat-trick to sink a star-studded Delhi to 134 under overcast conditions at the Feroz Shah Kotla

It is not possible (to perform well) if you don’t have a good partner.” Virat Kohli, on Imran: “Imran was really very good today. He was getting right movements by hitting the right areas and maintaining the right length. He maintained that throughout.” On a day when 16 wickets tumbled, the honours rested with Imran Ali, Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited’s (SNGPL) right-arm seamer, who took a hat-trick to sink a star-studded Delhi to 134 under overcast conditions at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Imran finished with 6 for 52 , claiming the wickets of Puneet Bisht, Chetanya Nanda and Pradeep Sangwan to attain his feat, spread over two overs. However, SNGPL were in for a rude shock of their own as their top order too crumbled and ended with a slender advantage of nine runs with four wickets in hand. The newly-laid surface at the Kotla was expected to assist the seamers on the opening day, but curiously enough, the Delhi captain Virender Sehwag opted to bat. It was a decision he would regret straightaway as he chopped one onto his stumps off Imran in the second over of the morning. His opening partner Aakash Chopra, the leading run-scorer in the previous Ranji season, started off the new campaign inauspiciously, fetching an away swinger off Asad Ali.Virat Kohli and Mithun Manhas began the rescue act and did do in positive fashion. The pair weren’t intimidated by the early swing as they counter-attacked for around 40 minutes. Manhas was the more aggressive of the two, slamming nine fours in his 49. However, the introduction of spin got SNGPL the breakthrough as Manhas offered a return catch to Imran Khalid, the left-arm spinner.Rain forced the players off the field, and the overcast conditions played into SNGPL’s hands as Imran ran through the middle order. Asad started the slide after the interruption, dismissing Rajat Bhatia for 1, before handing over to Imran. Four wickets fell for the addition of no runs as the middle order looked clueless against Imran’s swing and accuracy.Imran took three wickets in the 31st over. Mayank Tehlan edged to Adnan Akmal, Bisht was trapped lbw to one that pitched on a length and cut back in sharply and Nanda lasted just one ball, bowled by one that went straight though. With the first delivery of his next over, Imran trapped Sangwan in front with a slower ball to claim his hat-trick. Imran had incidentally taken a hat-trick in SNGPL’s victory in the ABN AMRO Cup limited-overs tournament in April, making it two in a row for his side.Another interruption – this time due to bad light – curtailed play and the innings was wrapped up soon after the resumption. The Delhi batting card had a sorry look to it, littered with five ducks and only two double-digit scores. The Delhi seamers couldn’t extract the same bounce as their opponents, with the exception of Ashish Nehra. He struck early with the wicket of Yasir Arafat, but was another when Ishant Sharma dropped Umar Akmal early in his innings. He capitalised with a half-century and with Mohammad Hafeez for company, took control with a stand of 49.However, a steady fall of wickets helped Delhi claw back, much like the opponents did to them earlier. Both Umar and Misbah-ul-Haq were bowled by Nanda in similar fashion, playing back to deliveries that straightened. Adnan was trapped leg before by Nehra just before stumps to leave the game more evenly-poised.

Man Utd linked to Nicolo Barella

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to bolster his squad ahead of a title tilt.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (as relayed by TheHardTackle), the Red Devils are interested in securing the 24-year-old’s signature this summer, but they may face competition from one of their domestic rivals.

The report also states that fellow Premier League outfit Liverpool are also keen on signing Barella, with the Reds believed to be in the market for Gini Wijnaldum’s successor.

Solskjaer would love him

Barella has established himself as one of the world’s best box-to-box midfielders since arriving at San Siro back in 2019, scoring seven goals and providing 21 assists in 87 appearances for the Nerazzurri, claiming the Serie A crown along the way.

His standout performances have earned several plaudits in his homeland, including former Juventus and Italy star Claudio Marchisio.

“As an ex-midfielder, I cannot help but admire the constant growth and talent of Nicolò Barella,” said Marchisio last season. “Such a young player, already mature and complete. Inter fans are fortunate, but even more fortunate is our Italy squad.”In an outstanding 2020/21 campaign, the diminutive dynamo recorded 1.3 key passes per league game, 1.6 tackles and one dribble, placing him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates, as per WhoScored.

Barella carried his incredible club form onto the international stage during the European Championships, scoring one goal and laying on a further two assists in six outings as Italy claimed the Euro 2020 trophy.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that two of English football’s heavy hitters are reportedly interested in snapping up the £58.5m-rated machine in the current window.

With Paul Pogba yet to commit his future to United amid continued speculation over a move to Paris Saint-Germain, Solskjaer would surely love to bring Barella to Old Trafford over the coming weeks.

His presence in the Red Devils’ engine room would go a long way to offsetting Pogba’s potential absence and could ensure the 20-time English champions remain in contention for next season’s Premier League crown.

Hathurusingha picks out three to watch

Sri Lanka A’s recent tour to South Africa has unearthed three potential players for the future, according to coach Chandika Hathurusingha

Sri Lanka A’s recent tour to South Africa has unearthed three potential players for the future, according to coach Chandika Hathurusingha.Hathurusingha, who played 26 Tests and 35 ODIs for Sri Lanka, has identified allrounder Angelo Mathews, fast bowler Suranga Lakmal and opener Tharanga Paranavitana as possibilities to represent the senior side.”What is so unique about them is that they are intelligent, pick things up very quickly, and they are quite matured for their age,” Hathurusingha said. “They seek information and absorb it very quickly. They should go a long way.”Sri Lanka A played four four-day games and five one-dayers in South Africa. Mathews, who plays for the Colts Cricket Club in domestic competitions, scored 173 runs in the Tests and 123 runs in the one-dayers, but only managed three wickets in the Tests. Lakmal, 21, bowled impressively although four wickets at 40.50 in two Tests and four at 50.75 in four one-dayers suggest otherwise, according to Hathurusingha. Paranavitana, 26, with a century and two half-centuries in the Tests, underlined his potential though he only managed 100 from four one-dayers.Sri Lanka’s batting clicked in the opening Test at Potchefstroom, where they scored 749 for 5 with four centurions – Paranavitana, Matthews, Thilina Kandamby and Kaushal Silva. In the second match South Africa prepared a green track and Sri Lanka lost six wickets in a session, which decided the fate of the match. The third match was a draw and South Africa won the series. Sri Lanka won the one-day series 4-1 and Hathurusingha termed the tour “very successful” due to the individual brilliance of certain players.Upul Tharanga, woefully out of form since the tour of England in 2006, scored 250 runs in the one-dayers at an impressive strike-rate of 101. “We worked on a few technical problems and with his game plan on how he should start the innings and go about it and what role he can play where he is most comfortable with,” Hathurusingha said. “That 173 [off 149 balls] hescored in the third one-dayer in East London was just fantastic. It was a flowing innings full of stroke-play. Upul has born talent and is naturally gifted. It was wonderful to see him back in the runs once again. He has not justified his talents. He has a little more work to do like working on his mental game plan.”The other player to benefit immensely from the tour was Kandamby, the captain, who scored two hundreds in the Test series and followed it up some sterling contributions in the one-day games. He topped the batting averages with 361 runs at 91.00. including a century and three half-centuries.”Two years ago there was an issue with Kandamby’s fitness, but since joining the Sinhalese Sports Club he has worked very hard on it,” Hathurusingha said. “His fitness played a crucial role. It improved his cricket overall and enabled him to concentrate and spend more time in the middle.”Coupled with it was his self-belief and maturity that saw him achieve most of the things on the tour and earn him a recall to the national team. If he maintains this form he should nail his place in the national side.”Kandamby, 26, earned a call-up to Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 side for a four-nation tournament in Canada this month.

Newcastle reportedly make Kamara move

A report from Italian newspaper Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness) has expressed confidence that Newcastle United will seal a near-€40million (£33.8million) deal for Boubacar Kamara.

The lowdown

21 year-old Kamara plays for Ligue 1 outfit Marseille and can operate as a centre-back, left-back and a defensive midfielder.

He made 35 league appearances last season, averaging 2.5 tackles, 1.9 successful aerial duels and three accurate long balls per 90 minutes (via WhoScored).

One of his former team-mates, Rolando, has labelled him a ‘phenomenon’ who will become a long-term fixture of the France national side.

On Monday, Shields Gazette journalist Liam Kennedy predicted that Newcastle would look to sign another central defender before the end of the window.

The latest

The report states that Marseille will be able to use the proceeds of Kamara’s big-money sale to Newcastle to fund a move for Lazio’s Gonzalo Escalante.

The youngster has entered the final year of his contract at the Stade Velodrome and played the full 90 minutes last weekend as his side came from two goals down to beat Montpellier 3-2.

The verdict

There’s no doubt this would be a magnificent signing for Newcastle, but it would also come as a pretty huge surprise.

As football finance expert Kieran Maguire explains, Mike Ashley is looking to ‘sell his house’ and appears to have little interest in ‘doing up the kitchen first’.

Newcastle could be about to invest more than £20million in the signing of Joe Willock. Surely Ashley won’t sanction a £33.8million swoop for Kamara as well?

In other news, Mark Douglas issued this prediction after the Willock fee was agreed.

Chennai look to inflict first defeat on Hyderabad

Big PictureChennai Superstars and Hyderabad Heroes are on equal points ahead of their clash on Tuesday but will be aware that a slip up could result in a drop down to the bottom half of the league. Chennai are currently third, having played an extra game, and will have their work cut out against an undefeated team which is currently ranked No. 2.Having started with comfortable wins against Dhaka and Ahmedabad, Chennai narrowly missed out against Chandigarh. However, the winners of the inaugural ICL 20-20 Indian Championship and runners-up in the domestic tournament in 2008 will look to get back to their winning ways.Their record against Hyderabad isn’t flash, though, for they haven’t beaten then once in four previous meetings. However, with Ian Harvey at the top, and the dependable R Satish and Russel Arnold in the middle, along Shabbir Ahmed and Nantie Hayward leading the bowling, Chennai could reverse the trend this time around.Hyderabad sent out a strong message to the teams in their very first match against Lahore: they would not give up their crown easily. They beat Lahore in a reduced match and then completed a thrilling win against Dhaka Warriors thanks to their captain Chris Harris.Abdul Razzaq has also looked in good form with both bat and ball for Hyderabad. He and Jimmy Maher form one of the most dangerous opening partnerships in the tournament. Ambati Rayudu will also be keen to get among the runs, having missed out against Dhaka after scoring 58 against Lahore.Watch out forHarvey: He possesses one of the wickedest slower balls in the game. He’s also a hard-hitting batsman and will look to give Chennai the perfect start at the top of the order.Arnold: Arnold’s ability to adapt his game to the situation makes him an ideal No.6 in the line-up. He keeps calm under pressure and is also an excellent fielder. Rayudu: A fluent stroke-maker with a compact technique, Rayudu has proved his abilities on several occasions. If the 58 against Lahore was anything to go by, he will play a big part in the fortunes of the Hyderabad Heroes this season.Harris came into his own when Hyderabad were struggling against Dhaka. He single-handedly rescued the match with a 17-ball 37. His slow medium pace could also play a key role in containing the Chennai batsmen during the middle overs.Quotes”It is good to see them coming out so well, it only adds to our relief.”
Harris on the performance of the local players in the squad“I think it has to be the Chennai Superstars; the rivalry has always been there with them”

Determined Australia make India toil

Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden led a solid collective effort from Australia on the third day in Delhi, although by the close there was no guarantee they would avoid the follow-on

Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden led a solid collective effort from Australia on the third day in Delhi, although by the close there was no guarantee they would avoid the follow-on. Virender Sehwag went from fifth bowling option to major striker with three wickets, including two key breakthroughs in the final session that left Australia needing 76 more runs to ensure India would bat again. It was a difficult day for Australia and the stumps scorecard did not fully reflect the gripping nature of the contest. There were no mammoth individual efforts like those from Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman; the most impressive aspect of Australia’s batting was simply their group fight.Replying to 613 is a psychologically difficult task and India’s bowlers did not make it any easier. Even without Anil Kumble for one and a half sessions – he went to hospital for treatment on a cut finger after getting his hands to a fierce Hayden stroke at short midwicket – the attack was constantly threatening.Sehwag, India’s prime offspinner in the absence of Harbhajan Singh, was as dangerous as any of the specialists as he spun some deliveries sharply while others sailed straight on towards the stumps. He gave India momentum at key intervals and his removal of Michael Hussey and Ponting after tea sparked something in his team-mates.Hussey had worked incredibly hard for his 53, only to see his dead-straight bat beaten by a superb offbreak that clipped the off-stump. Ponting had already departed to a ball that pitched in the rough and turned back to rattle his stumps and the two blows came at just the right time for India. They were frustrated that Ponting survived a super spell of reverse-swing bowling from Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan, who tested his focus more rigorously than a pair of optometrists. As expected, Ishant troubled him with deliveries that bounced and jagged back in sharply. Zaheer’s swing was also a challenge. Despite a couple of indecisive and almost fatal leave-play-leave moments, Ponting somehow survived.Smart StatsThe 123-run stand between Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich was their first century partnership in the nine innings they have batted together.Virender Sehwag bowled 22 overs today, which is only the third time he’s bowled more than 20 overs in an innings. His highest is 30 overs, in an innings against West Indies in 2006 but with Australia just four wickets down and the Kotla pitch taking plenty of turn, Sehwag may well overhaul that figure tomorrow.Of the 27 wickets Sehwag has captured in his Test career, 20 have been of batsmen in the top seven. This is the first time the top four Australian batsmen have all scored 50 or more in an innings against India. Against all teams, Australia have done it 13 times.Ricky Ponting didn’t get out to Ishant Sharma today, but he was more cautious against him than any other bowler. Ponting managed just 9 runs in 26 balls off Ishant at a strike rate of 34.61. Ponting played Amit Mishra quite well, scoring 35 off 60 balls including six fours, and scored 17 from 32 balls off Sehwag, who eventually dismissed him.Matthew Hayden handled Zaheer Khan, his nemesis in this series, with restraint as well, scoring just 17 runs off 40 balls from Zaheer, and made 10 from 33 off Anil Kumble, but was more fluent against the other bowlers, particularly Amit Mishra, whom he hit for 22 off 27.For a batsman who favours the sweep shot, Hayden surprisingly kept that stroke in the closet, employing it four times – and getting just four runs – during his knock of 83.There were some genuinely good strokes from Ponting, who was desperate not to stagnate. He drove Amit Mishra beautifully straight back down the ground for four and pounced on occasional full tosses and long-hops. But for a man who usually makes batting look so simple, this innings was as fluent as his Hindi. In many ways, that made it even more impressive that he reached 87. His 82-run partnership with Hussey continued to grind Australia towards avoiding the follow-on after the early work of Hayden and Simon Katich. Importantly for Australia, the stings throughout the day were well-spaced, although a swarm of bees that descended on the stadium just after lunch briefly provided a different sort of threat. When the players and umpires avoided the buzzers by lying flat in their positions – some perpendicular to the pitch, some parallel – the aerial view looked like a human version of the board game Battleship. Sachin Tendulkar was the small and aptly-named destroyer, Hayden the hulking aircraft carrier. And it wasn’t long before Sehwag sank the biggest ship with a perfectly targeted missile.Hayden had survived a few close calls, including an edge off Sehwag that landed centimetres short of Rahul Dravid at first slip, before his fortune ran out. Playing back to a Sehwag delivery that held its line, Hayden was lbw for 83 and Australia were 202 for 2. It was a respectable scoreline but after two of the opposition made double-centuries Australia wanted at least a single hundred from one of their top men.Still, Hayden’s innings was a step in the right direction following his struggles in the first two Tests. He was more composed, he watched the ball closely and waited for opportunities, and rarely did he try to bully the bowlers. He went over the top only when it was safe to do so – he pulled a Mishra long-hop viciously for six and cut Zaheer without risk over the cordon to the vacant third man region.Generally his bat was straight and it was noticeable that he ignored the sweep that undid him in Mohali. A classic cover-driven boundary off Ishant gave Hayden his first half-century of the tour and he was part of two important partnerships: a 123-run opening stand with Simon Katich and a 79-run compilation with Ponting. In what was by far Australia’s most positive start of the tour, Katich scored more freely than the watchful Hayden and used his feet impressively to the two legspinners. But on 64 he tried to close the face and clip Mishra through leg – a tactic that had worked before – but could only watch on as the ball spat out of the rough and collected his middle stump. He was not the only batsman who would have that feeling. The task will only get tougher in the final two days of the Test. For now, Australia cannot look that far ahead. Their primary goal must be to knock off the 76 runs they require to avoid the follow-on.

West Brom interested in Daryl Dike

West Bromwich Albion are interested in a deal to bring Daryl Dike to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Express & Star, who claimed that Valerien Ismael is keen to add a traditional centre-forward to his Albion squad in the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window, with the Orlando City striker thought to be one of the Frenchman’s targets.

The 21-year-old, who the Baggies boss knows well from his time at Barnsley, failed to secure a move to the Tykes earlier this summer despite the club having an option to make his loan deal a permanent move, as they could not afford to pay Orlando’s asking price for the USA international.

Finally, the report stated that the MLS club could be tempted into sanctioning the temporary departure of the youngster once again this summer, albeit with a significant loan fee attached to a potential deal.

Ismael would love him

With Ismael currently lacking a traditional number nine in his Albion squad – with only Kenneth Zohore somewhat fitting this description – and Dike impressing under the Frenchman at Oakwell last season, the signing of the 21-year-old would very much appear to be a deal that the West Brom manager would love to get over the line this summer.

Indeed, over his 19 Championship appearances for the Tykes last term – 13 of which came as starts – the £7.2m-rated man scored a whopping nine goals, a rate of 0.5 per game, as well as averaging 1.7 shots per match.

These returns saw the man Ismael himself dubbed an “unbelievable” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.02, ranking him as Barnsley’s third-best performer in the league in 2020/21.

As such, it would indeed appear highly advisable for club owner Guochuan Lai to do all he can to secure the signing of Dike this summer. Not only would the centre-forward’s arrival solve a considerable problem for West Brom, it would also more than likely go down very well with the 45-year-old coach, who knows full well what the American can do when at his best.
